BookFunnel alternatives: how else to deliver a reader magnet

BookFunnel is the default for a reason, and the reason is not the file hosting. Here is what the alternatives actually give you, and what you give up.

The short answer: BookFunnel is the industry standard for reader-magnet delivery because it solves the genuinely hard part — getting an epub onto a stranger's Kindle without a support conversation — and because group promos and newsletter swaps in most genres are organised on it. The credible alternatives are StoryOrigin (cheaper, and bundles swap matching and ARC management into the same tool), Prolific Works (giveaway-focused), and direct sellers such as Payhip or Gumroad (delivery without any promo network). The deciding question is rarely price. It is where the authors you want to swap with already are.

What BookFunnel is actually solving

Hosting a file is trivial. The hard problem is that the reader who just gave you their email address is holding a Kindle, or a Kobo, or an iPhone, or an Android tablet, and each one loads an epub differently — and if it fails, they do not email you, they simply leave. BookFunnel's real product is the delivery page that recognises the device and walks that reader through it, plus the support desk that answers when it still goes wrong.

The second thing it sells, less obviously, is a network. Group promos, swap organisers and multi-author giveaways in several genres are built on BookFunnel links. That network effect, not the hosting, is what makes leaving it costly.

Why this comes from real author data. Perfect Year HQ runs the working year for 29 paying author accounts across 51 pen names, tracking 717 books, with 550 promo and swap slots on their calendars and 451 plan versions generated and re-fitted as their years changed. What follows reflects what actually moved for them — not a survey. Figures measured 22 August 2026.

The alternatives, compared

StoryOriginDelivery plus newsletter-swap matching, group promos and ARC/review team management in one subscription, generally at lower cost.Smaller partner pool than BookFunnel in some genres, so swap availability depends on where your genre lives.Authors who want swaps, ARCs and delivery in a single tool and are cost-conscious.
Prolific WorksLarge-scale free giveaways and group events; long-running instant-delivery model.Giveaway-first audiences skew toward heavy freebie collectors, so list quality needs watching.Rapid list building where volume matters more than immediate buyer intent.
Payhip / GumroadGenuinely good file delivery, and the same account can sell paid direct editions later. No author promo network, no swap matching, no device hand-holding for the reader.Authors who already have traffic and want delivery plus a direct-sales option.

Feature sets and pricing on all of these change; confirm current plans on each site before switching. The columns worth arguing about are the last four, not the first three — everyone can deliver a file.

The question that actually decides it

Not price. Where are the authors you want to swap with? A cheaper platform that leaves you arranging every swap by hand costs more in hours than it saves in subscription. Before switching, look at the last ten group promos or swaps you were invited to and count which platform they ran on. If it is BookFunnel, the subscription is buying you the network and the switch is a false economy. If your genre's organisers have moved, or you are building from scratch and budget is tight, StoryOrigin is a reasonable place to start — the head-to-head comparison goes through it feature by feature.

A pragmatic middle path: keep BookFunnel for delivery and swaps because that is where your partners are, and use Payhip or Gumroad separately for paid direct sales. Nothing requires one tool to do both.

Whichever you choose, the magnet still has to work

Delivery platform is a second-order decision. A well-matched free book delivered clumsily still outperforms a poorly-matched one delivered perfectly. Get the magnet right first — genre-true, ending on a reason to read the next thing, with back matter that points somewhere — and see the reader magnet guide for how to choose one.

Where Perfect Year HQ fits

Perfect Year HQ does not deliver your files. It runs the plan around them.

Your free books appear automatically from your connected BookFunnel account, so choosing your lead magnet is a tap rather than a form. Your swap partners come straight from your connected BookClicker. Delivery-link health checks every BookFunnel and BookClicker link tied to an upcoming promo, so no reader hits a dead download — and Swap Admin runs your promo weeks for you.

Questions authors ask

What is the best alternative to BookFunnel?

StoryOrigin is the closest like-for-like alternative: it delivers files to readers, runs group promos and newsletter-swap matching, and manages ARC teams, usually at a lower cost. Prolific Works suits authors focused on large free giveaways. Payhip and Gumroad deliver files well but have no author promo network at all, so they fit authors who already have traffic and only need delivery.

Can I deliver a reader magnet without BookFunnel?

Yes. You can attach an epub or PDF to a welcome email, host the file behind a link, or use a store like Payhip or Gumroad to deliver a free product. The cost is support: readers on Kindle, Kobo, iPhones and Android tablets all load files differently, and the reason BookFunnel is standard is that it walks each reader through their own device instead of leaving that to you.

Is StoryOrigin cheaper than BookFunnel?

StoryOrigin is generally the lower-cost option and bundles newsletter swaps, group promos and ARC management into a single subscription, where BookFunnel prices delivery and promo features in tiers. Pricing on both changes, so check current plans directly - and weigh the difference against which platform your genre's swap partners actually use, which usually matters more than the subscription.

Do newsletter swaps require BookFunnel?

Not technically - a swap is just two authors emailing each other's book to their lists, and the link can point anywhere. In practice many group promos and swap organisers in romance and other high-volume genres are built around BookFunnel, so being elsewhere can mean more manual arrangement. StoryOrigin runs its own swap and group-promo network as an alternative.

Does Perfect Year HQ replace BookFunnel?

No. Perfect Year HQ reads your free books from your connected BookFunnel account so your lead magnet can be chosen with a tap rather than typed in, takes your swap partners from your connected BookClicker, and checks that every BookFunnel and BookClicker link tied to an upcoming promo is still healthy. Delivery stays with BookFunnel; the planning, the swap admin and the link checking are what Perfect Year HQ adds.
