Book ads: the ways authors pay for attention, and the order to try them

Book ads for self-published authors range from bid-based ads such as Amazon ads and BookBub Ads to paid newsletter features and unpaid swaps, and the order to try them is the one where your listing and series can hold the readers you buy.

The short answer: Start with unpaid swaps, then run one Amazon Sponsored Products campaign on book one, then add a paid newsletter feature timed to a launch, and consider BookBub once the series can hold the traffic. Amazon Sponsored Products charge per click against a bid and budget you set, BookBub Ads are an auction priced per impression or per click, and paid features charge a fixed fee for a placement. Judge every one of them on the whole series for the 14 days afterward, not on the advertised book alone.

What are the main kinds of book ads?

Book ads fall into three groups: ads you bid for, paid features that charge a fixed fee, and swaps that cost no placement fee. This page covers the channels whose own help pages we could read on 7 Oct 2026: Amazon, BookBub, Freebooksy and Written Word Media. It does not cover Facebook, Instagram or TikTok ads.

How do bid-based book ads differ from paid features?

With Amazon ads you set a bid and a budget and pay when a reader clicks, and BookBub Ads are an auction priced per impression or per click; with a paid feature you pay a fixed fee for a placement whether or not readers act on it.

That changes how you test. A bid-based campaign can start small and teach you something over weeks, which is why a single campaign on book one is a sensible first test. A paid feature is a single dated event, so it needs a calendar slot, a book that fits the list's rules and a baseline recorded beforehand.

Which book ads should you try first?

Try the options that cost least to test first, and add one channel at a time so you can tell which one did what.

  1. Swaps. You trade the attention you already have for attention you do not. See the newsletter swaps guide.
  2. One Amazon ads campaign. Run it on book one of a series and judge it across the series. See Amazon ads for authors.
  3. A paid newsletter feature, timed to an event. Freebooksy takes free books; a BookBub Featured Deal needs a discount of at least 50 percent or a free book. See the Freebooksy review and the BookBub alternatives guide.
  4. BookBub Ads. BookBub says author interest targeting reaches any reader who has expressed interest in an author, including followers and readers who clicked a Featured Deal for that author's books, and it encourages author targeting if you want a higher click-through rate.

How much do book ads cost?

Cost depends on the channel: swaps have no placement fee, Amazon Sponsored Products cost the bid and budget you set, BookBub Ads cost what the auction decides, and features charge a published fee, such as $25 to $245 for standard and series features at Freebooksy as listed on 7 Oct 2026.

A fee is not the cost of a customer. The number that matters is what a reader is worth across the series, which is what the next sections measure.

When should you not buy book ads?

Hold off until the listing is right, and skip ads on a standalone with nothing to read next, when you cannot see the results, or while another promotion is already doing the job.

How do you know a book ad worked?

Compare units and page reads across the whole series for the 14 days after the ad with the 30 days before, because a reader has to finish book one before book two moves.

Amazon's own help shows why you cannot rely on one report. The Ads console counts sales of the advertised book within 14 days of a click, its ad sales do not include Kindle Unlimited pages read, and your KDP account shows every sale and page read whatever led to it. The KDP reports guide covers where each number lives.

Perfect Year HQ's Money tab syncs your real units, page reads and royalties every hour. Its panel called “Which promos actually moved copies” compares the promo swaps it can match to a book with your own baseline, a “Solo ads to sales lift” panel does the same for solo ads you log (both are before-and-after comparisons, not proof of cause), and its profit and loss view takes an expense entry for ad costs.

What about ad images and copy?

For ad images, Perfect Year HQ's Launch tab has a “Make my mood & trope graphics” step that opens BookAdPack, a separate product you pay for separately, which reads your book and builds ad images, launch graphics and ad copy. Your Perfect Year HQ subscription does not cover BookAdPack credits.

Where Perfect Year HQ fits

Perfect Year HQ does not sell ads. It keeps the calendar and the scoreboard.

Perfect Year HQ lays your launches, promo dates and swaps on one calendar built around your real pace, handles the admin on your Bookclicker swaps, and syncs your real KDP numbers so each ad reads as before and after. Its Playbook has an “Am I ready for ads?” play and plays that build and set up Amazon ads. It does not read your ad accounts today; advice from live ad spend is listed as coming next on its homepage.

Questions authors ask

What are book ads?

Book ads are paid ways to put a book in front of readers: bid-based ads such as Amazon ads and BookBub Ads, paid features in genre newsletters such as Freebooksy, and managed services that run campaigns for you. Swaps with other authors do the same job with no placement fee.

What is the best way to advertise a book?

There is no single best channel. Amazon Sponsored Products reach shoppers on Amazon and charge per click, BookBub Ads are an auction, paid newsletter features reach genre subscribers for a fixed fee, and swaps cost no placement fee. Start where your listing and series can hold the traffic, add one channel at a time, and measure it across the whole series.

How much do book ads cost?

It varies by channel. Swaps have no placement fee, Amazon Sponsored Products charge per click against a bid and budget you set, and Freebooksy lists standard and series features from $25 to $245 by genre as of 7 Oct 2026. BookBub Featured Deals carry a one-time fee charged only after you confirm a selected deal, and BookBub Ads run on an auction.

Do book ads work?

In our view, ads give a listing that already converts more to work with. Judge any ad on the whole series for the 14 days afterward against a baseline you recorded first, not on the advertised book alone.

What is the difference between a BookBub Featured Deal and BookBub Ads?

A Featured Deal is a discounted or free book that BookBub's editors choose, with a one-time fee charged only if it is selected. With BookBub Ads you create the campaign, choose the targeting and bid in an auction, and you can promote full-priced, discounted, new and backlist books.

Can I advertise a book for free?

Yes, in part. Swaps with other authors have no placement fee, and your own newsletter and the back matter of your books cost nothing to use. Paid reach comes after the listing converts and a reader list exists.

Do I need a series before I run book ads?

It is not required, but it helps. A series gives each reader a next book to buy or read, so an ad can pay back across the series. A standalone has to pay for itself on the first sale.

Does Perfect Year HQ run book ads?

No. Perfect Year HQ does not sell ads or placements and does not connect to your ad accounts today. It plans your launch and promo calendar, handles the admin on your Bookclicker swaps, syncs your real KDP sales to measure results, and has plays that help you check readiness for Amazon ads and set them up.
